This is the heartbreaking story of David Reimer. David and his twin brother were born in Canada; their mother experiencing an uncomplicated normal pregnancy and delivery. David (Bruce Peter Reimer; 22 August 1965), was born male but raised as a girl following medical advice and gender reassignment intervention after his penis was severed to a stump during a botched circumcision in infancy.
After watching a television programme about gender reassignment, David's parents approached The Psychologist Dr John Money, who at the time was gaining fame as a pioneer in gender identity and transgender psychology; Money believed that gender was not innate but a learned behaviour. Dr John Money oversaw the gender reassignment for David, however, the experiment was to go horribly wrong, resulting in tragic consequences for David and his family.
